Volunteer Spotlight: Frank Stanislaski

As a water community, Ocean Beach Fire Company’s busy season is the summer, but volunteer Frank Stanislaski, 36, is the captain year round.

He’s not just fighting typical structure fires either. Volunteers use jet skis for ocean rescue, and the fire boat for water rescue incidents in the bay, as well as to fight boat fires or house fires. There’s also gas leaks, car accidents, and various other emergencies to respond to. In the summer, Ocean Beach is busy with community events and fundraisers such as hosting pancake breakfasts and participating in parades.

“Firefighting has taught me how to stay somewhat calm in chaotic situations,” said Frank, who also served as assistant chief two years ago. “I know to take a deep breath and a step back to see how to solve the problem. It also teaches you how to prioritize problems; what needs to be done now versus what can wait for later.”

No prior experience is required to join the Toms River Fire Department. Training and gear are provided to year-round and seasonal firefighters. Since a lot of the homes are rentals or second homes near Ocean Beach, career firefighters from New York or other areas of New Jersey will volunteer as seasonal firefighters in the summer. While that is their peak time for calls, Ocean Beach Fire Company can use more volunteers any time of year.

“Give back to the community you live in. You’ll meet a lot of great people who can help you in life – plumbers, contractors, lawyers – that you may need down the line,” said Frank, who works as a commercial mortgage broker. “The volunteers are willing to help you with anything. It really is a brotherhood.”

Frank has been experiencing the family aspect of the fire department since he was two-years-old and his dad, who was a firefighter, started bringing him there.

“I was always around the firehouse, so I saw what they did and wanted to help,” said Frank. “Then when you go through the academy and training, you learn a lot more about what is involved.”

To anyone interested in joining Toms River Fire Department, Frank says its big time commitment, but it will also be one of the most rewarding things you ever do.
