Volunteer Spotlight: Joey Genovese

Joey Genovese, 21, recently completed his NJ Firefighter Level 1 and 2 at the Toms River Fire Academy, where he achieved the Spike Baran award – the highest honor as top recruit of his class.

“I was shocked when my name was called since I was not expecting to get it, but it felt good knowing that all my hard work and dedication was recognized by the instructors,” said Joey, volunteer firefighter who joined Toms River Fire Co. No. 1 about a year ago.

“Firefighting is something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “My experience so far has been amazing and the opportunities that arise are endless.”

Toms River Fire Department provided Joey with training and gear to earn his NJ Firefighter Level 1 and 2, as well as complete his Rook Book, a collection of basic level tasks. His favorite part about volunteering is being able to help others in their time of need.

“What I’ve learned about myself so far through volunteering is that I can accomplish and get to experience things I would have never thought possible,” he said.

Joey answers fire calls, auto accidents, rescues and more. Volunteers must attend 40% of calls, meetings and fires to be in good standing. When Joey isn’t volunteering, he works as a welder.

“More people should join Toms River Fire Department because the education, experiences and brotherhood is something you won’t find anywhere else,” said Joey.
