Volunteer Spotlight: Michael LeDuc

Two years ago, Michael LeDuc’s friend convinced him to join East Dover Fire Company, and he was hooked shortly after.

“Being a firefighter is by no stretch of the imagination something everyone can do; however, it is in my opinion the best way to protect, serve and give back to the community, especially, if you’re like myself and have lived in Toms River your whole life,” said Michael, 24.

Overall, he’s had a great experience as a volunteer firefighter. Toms River Fire Department provided the training and equipment he needed to become certified and respond to calls.

“It’s a good group of people that chose to dedicate a rather large portion of their time to help their community,” said Michael.

To be considered in good standing, volunteers must attend 40% of calls and meetings. Michael is able to balance volunteering with work, and in his free time he enjoys playing video games, surfing in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.

East Dover Fire Company becomes a second family for many volunteers. Firefighters form a bond as they train and answer calls involving fire suppression, auto extractions, water rescues and more.

“Despite all the jokes we throw each other’s way, I know my fellow firefighters have my back,” said Michael

The Toms River Fire Department also provides the following benefits: a clothing allowance, pension plan, life insurance and gym membership sponsorship.
