Alexander and Joseph Roman, ages 19 and 16, are following in their dad’s footsteps as volunteer firefighters in the Toms River Fire Department. Daniel, 52, grew up living two blocks from the firehouse.
“I always heard the sirens going off. My grandfather and uncles were firefighters up in Monmouth County, and I always wanted to be a fireman,” he said.
Dan has been a volunteer firefighter for 35 years and also serves as Chairman and Fire Commissioner of District 1. He has four kids, who have also been raised around the fire service, has been married for 21 years, and is also the co-owner of Picket Fencing.
“My dad is an amazing leader,” said Joseph. “He always looks out for everyone and puts others before himself. He has the best intentions for the firehouse.”
Dan served as Chief of Pleasant Plains Fire Company for three years, and his first year as Chief coincided with Alex’s first year as a junior firefighter. On Alex’s first call as a full member at age 18, the fire company went to a structure fire, and Alex got to go inside with his dad.
“It’s one thing to go on a truck with your friends, but it’s another to look at the guy next to you and it’s your dad,” he said.
Growing up, Alex and Joseph were always tagging along on fire calls. Alex also recalls when he was around five years old and went on a call with his dad.
“My dad told me to sit in the truck. Thirty minutes later, they found me walking around the fireground with a police officer,” said Alex.
Dan was also very involved while Alex and Joseph participated in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and watched them both become Eagle Scouts.
“From being in Scouts, they have great leadership skills and they’re able to teach others,” said Dan. “It’s been fun to watch them grow and do more as they get older.”
Alex is currently interviewing with EMS and fire companies for a paid position. He encourages more teens and young adults to volunteer.
“If you played sports, it’s the same teamwork mentality in the fire service,” said Alex. “Even if you don’t want to pursue a career, it’s a resume maker.”
Meanwhile, Joseph is attending the fire academy this summer to earn his Firefighter I and II certifications and is also a student at the Academy of Law and Public Safety.
“It’s awesome being able to volunteer with my family and learn from them both. My favorite part is helping others and giving back,” said Joseph.
He’s also really enjoying the junior program and training every Thursday.
“It’s a fun program, and I’m learning skills I never knew before,” said Joseph. “There are so many guys with different experiences and backgrounds to learn from and be able to see things from every angle.”
One of the most important lessons that Alex has learned is, “Just because you’re not on a fire truck, doesn’t mean you can’t help others.”
When he was going on a fishing trip with his buddies, they saw a guy sitting in his car in the middle of Route 72. They called 911 and were able to get him alert before the police and emergency services arrived on the scene.
“When you go on calls, it’s for your neighbors. Everyone here is your neighbor, and it’s for the community you’re serving,” added Alex.
The Toms River Fire Department is seeking more volunteers to join its team. Training and gear are provided to all members.
“The Toms River Fire Department is like a big family,” said Dan. “It brings camaraderie, builds friendships, and it’s a great overall experience where you can help your community.”
