Father Son Spotlight: John and Colin Keating

John Keating, 56, volunteered as a firefighter with his father, and the experience became full circle when his son, Colin, 18, joined about six months ago.

“Growing up around the fire service and seeing the impact firefighters have when people need help the most really inspired me,” said John. “Years ago, I had the opportunity to volunteer with my father, and those experiences meant a lot to me. Now, being able to share that same experience with my son is really special. It feels like continuing a tradition of service and commitment to our community.”

John is the Chief of Silverton Fire Company and has been a member there for 15 years. He is a life member there as well as Garfield Fire Department, where he served for 25 years. Between the two towns, he’s served as a Fire Chief for 20 years.

John is also a retired Police Lieutenant in the City of Garfield in Bergen County, but has stayed busy in retirement as a paid firefighter in a neighboring town and a Level 2 fire instructor at the Toms River Fire Academy.

When it comes to Colin’s service as a volunteer, John said his most memorable moment was when the Fire Commissioners allowed him to swear in Colin as an official member.

“As a father and as a firefighter, that was a moment I’ll never forget. Being able to stand there and administer the oath to him was incredibly meaningful and something I’m very proud of,” said John.

As an instructor at the Toms River Fire Academy, John has also enjoyed teaching him new skills and seeing him grow into his role.

“It’s a special experience getting to do something that I have been around my whole life, specifically with my dad,” said Colin. “I enjoy the constant bettering of each other and him helping me at the academy and showing me how to do it the right way.”

A unique part about the Toms River Fire Department is that it has its own fire academy.

“Not many towns can say they have a fire academy in their own backyard. The training and education possibilities are really endless,” said John. “The instruction is top-notch, and members have access to some of the best training opportunities available to help them grow and succeed in the fire service.”

Through his training, Colin has learned teamwork, leadership, communication and how to stay calm under pressure.

“Those skills help not only in the fire service, but in everyday life too,” he said.

Colin joined Silverton Fire Company because he always wanted to be part of something bigger than himself.

“Seeing the impact firefighters have on the community inspired me to get involved, and also watching my dad make a huge impact on others’ lives,” said Colin.

As Colin continues to develop his skills as a volunteer firefighter, John says, “What I enjoy most is watching the sense of pride and responsibility grow in him, just like it did for me when I volunteered with my father.”

In addition to volunteering with actual family members, the Fire Department is like one large family, and teamwork is one of the most valuable skills to learn.

“In the fire service, you quickly learn that success depends on everyone working together and trusting each other when the situation matters most,” said John.

For any community members who want to volunteer, Colin says, “It’s an incredible opportunity to serve the community. It’s challenging at times, but it’s very rewarding.”

“At the end of the day, you’re giving back to the community that supports you,” added John.  “If someone is looking for a way to make a real difference while building friendships and skills that last a lifetime, volunteering with the Toms River Fire Department is a great place to start.

This year, John is also celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary with his wife, Ursula, and they have a daughter, Jordyn, who is studying to become a physical therapist.
